Meet the people, walk the land, and sense history firsthand.

Twelve days in Bath, Bristol, the Cotswolds, and the Jurassic Coast.

June is the ideal time to visit England–the fields and gardens are lush, summer activities are kicking off, and the sun sets late for after-dinner strolls.” —Margaret

Itinerary

Jurassic Coast

Tour begins in Bath, England and ends in London.

  • 3 nights in elegant Bath: Meet me in genteel Bath, an easy ~2-hour transfer from Heathrow. The incredible Roman baths still flow, and the town’s elegant honey-colored buildings look the same as in Jane Austen’s era–and we’ll enjoy a traditional afternoon tea just as she would have. We’ll explore this walkable small city with my local guide friend, then explore by water on a canal cruise. The vast Avebury stone circle is our daytrip nearby–my favorite alternative to touristy Stonehenge. It’s a mystical, timeless experience where you can walk right among the ancient stones and actually touch them.

  • 2 nights in edgy Bristol: Where Bath is elegant and refined, Bristol is funky, hip, and artsy. Its lively student vibe is layered over a rich history of early sea trade (and pirates!), Victorian engineering milestones, and WWII bombing raids. We’ll don hard hats to explore the inner workings of its signature suspension bridge, and we’ll get a sense of Bristol’s role in transatlantic trade at the fascinating seaport museum. We’ll duck down back streets with our local guide to find the creative, outspoken street art of local son Banksy, and chow down on fun street food at one of England’s favorite markets.

  • 3 nights in the bucolic Cotswolds: The Cotswold villages are the England of your dreams: thatched-roof cottages, fields of sheep, meandering country lanes, and gardens overflowing with blooms. Let’s follow country paths on an easy hike through this bucolic scenery, ending at a pub for a pint and a hearty lunch. And at nearby Hidcote–one of my favorite English gardens–it will be peak season for the blooms in its lush Arts and Crafts-era garden “rooms” and landscaped vistas.

  • 3 nights on Dorset’s dramatic Jurassic Coast: This World Heritage-designated stretch of the southern England coast is where a 19th-century female fossil hunter expanded the new field of paleontology with her discoveries. Stunning cliffs and picturesque coves erode to reveal plant and animal life preserved in its layers–and with an expert, we’ll not only learn its history, we’ll search for fossils ourselves! We’ll capture breathtaking views on a cliffside walk, and toast our adventure and our friends over a final hearty dinner together.

  • Tour ends with transportation to London. An optional 3-night London extension will be planned based on traveler interest.

FAQ

The Cotswolds

  • We stay in very comfortable 3- and 4-star hotels right in the heart of the towns we visit or in peaceful countryside settings. Each one is beautifully decorated, and has a friendly staff and a delicious breakfast. They may be in modern buildings or in historic structures, so each room will be unique (and you may have to climb stairs!).

  • There is some kind of walking tour each day, and you’ll certainly be walking more in your free time. Figure several miles a day, sometimes on uneven surfaces. Lots of standing on city sidewalks and marble floors can sometimes be equally tiring—make sure your back and knees can handle this. We’ll definitely work off those English breakfasts!

  • This tour is designed to strike a balance between group time and your own free time to explore or just relax. I will be on hand to help you plan your activities during free time.

  • Bath’s nearest airport is Bristol, but it’s easy to connect from London and its airports, especially Heathrow. Airport shuttles or an easy bus/train combo from Heathrow take about 2 hours to Bath. Some travelers like to arrive a day or more early in England and book a hotel on their own, to start adjusting to the time change and to explore sights we won’t be visiting as a group. If you arrive the day the tour starts, plan to get there before lunch to get settled before our start time. Whether or not you book the London extension, the tour includes transportation to London on the last day, and the airport is quick and easy to reach by train or taxi.

  • With England’s colonial history and diversity, there’s a plethora of fantastic food! The old stereotype of bad food in Britain is definitely outdated. At our group meals we’ll enjoy everything from pub grub to modern gourmet dishes to Indian fare. (The best Indian food I’ve ever had was in England–remember, it was a colony!) And of course fish and chips is a must-try. Brits prize their local agriculture so we’ll certainly be tasting local produce and cheeses. It’s fun to sample the vast array of English “puddings” (desserts) and candies, too!
