Highlights

Rosengarten

What makes the Dolomites unique, in addition to their stunning beauty, is how accessible they are. Lifts whisk you up high and there’s always a hut nearby.

An elegant series of hikes through stunning scenery. About four-hours walking each day, using lifts and luggage portage to travel light.

Explore a WWI open air museum, with its maze of tunnels, trenches, and lookouts carved through rock.

Try an entry level via ferrata. With the right gear, scale to ever greater heights.

Or just ride the cable car!

Itinerary

Alpe di Tires

Tour meets in Bolzano for a private bus transfer to the Alpe di Siusi, and ends in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Day 1—Mon. Our tour begins at 3pm at our Bolzano meeting point for a welcome celebration followed by a scenic drive north into the high alpine valley, the Alpe di Siusi. We’ll get oriented to the village of Compatsch, then check into our hotel and enjoy a sunset dinner together. (Bus 1 hour, light walking, sleep in Compatsch 2 nights)

Day 2—Tue. Guten morgen! Our hotel is situated in a cow pasture for organic dairy farming, and the breakfast buffet is full of local dairy specialties plus wonder breads, pastries, an array of nuts, grains, and fresh produce—a real hiker’s breakfast. This is our warm-up day, making use of the many lifts and trails in the Alpe di Siusi. With your lift pass, you’ll ride unlimited throughout the tour. There are easy, medium, and hard walks to choose, and the hotel spa opens mid-afternoon. A group dinner awaits. (Walking: your choice).

Day 3—Wed. Today we pack our overnight packs and send the rest of our luggage to our next hotel—two days from now. We’re heading up into the Alpe di Tires for two nights in mountain huts. The route is a switchback climb above the trees to a moonscape-like ridge and the dignified Schlern peak. Welcome to the High Dolomites! This evening you’ll rest well after our group dinner, retiring to your private room at 8,000'. (Walking: 4 hours; Sleep: Rifugio Alpe di Tires 1 night)

Day 4—Thur. Don’t miss the spectacular show that begins about an hour before sunrise: morning alpenglow. A hearty breakfast at the rifugio will fuel us up for the day. We walk south today, into the mythic Rosengarten (Catinaccio, in Italian) mountains that inspired King Laurin. You can lunch one of the huts we pass by, making our way past the Vajolet Towers and up to the beautifully remodeled (in 2022) Rifugio Santnerpass. Group dinner together. (Walking 4 hours: Sleep: Rifugio Santnerpass 1 night).

Day 5—Fri. We’ll travel across several valleys today, our longest distance day. After a downhill morning walk, we’ll then link together seven lifts across the Val di Fassa to reach Passo Pordoi, in the Sella range. Our luggage awaits us at our hotel for at the pass. Group dinner together. (Walking: 4 hours. Sleep: Hotel Savoia 2 nights)

Day 6—Sat. Today is rest day, free to spend as you like at Passo Pordoi. Ride the cable car to the Terrace of the Dolomites atop the Sella massif, to 10,000’ elevation. Or take the local bus to Canazei, a charming ski town. Hiking options abound. Free evening for dinner. (Walking: you choice)

Day 7—Sun. Buongiorno! We’ll pack up for another two-night trek through the mountains, using private transport to take us into the Italian-speaking region, Veneto. We spend our day at Passo Falzarego, where a cable car runs to Monte Lagazuoi. The pass was on the frontlines of WWI and today is full of relics from the era. You can explore tunnels, trenches, lookouts, and even try an entry level via ferrata route used by Austrian soldiers to reach the summit—now a 5-minute cabe car ride away. Group dinner together. (Driving: 1 hour; Walking: 1 hour + your choice; Sleep: Rifugio Col Gallina 1 night).

Day 8—Mon. This morning we’ll make use of the cable car to get us up high, then traverse across to the Tofana massif. We’ll stop for lunch at Rifugio Dibona, then continue up to our rifugio overlooking Cortina d’Ampezzo. Group dinner together. (Walking: 3 hours; Sleep: Rifugio Pomedes)

Day 9—Tue. A short downhill walk (or lift ride) will take us just below the Tofana face. An easy walk then connects to the Ra Valles lifts, where you can choose to ride—or climb—your way to one of the highest views in the Dolomites: The Tofana di Mezzo at 10,700’ of elevation. We’ve come a long way! Your reward (if clear) is a distant view across breaking waves of Dolomite rock to the Alpe di Siusi and beyond. Riding back down via two cable cars and a gondola, we arrive in Cortina d’Ampezzo, home of the 2026 Winter Olympics. We’ll toast our adventure with a celebratory last night dinner. (Walking: 2 hours; Sleep: Hotel Ambra 1 night)

Day 10—Wed. Our adventure ends here after breakfast and checkout. We’ll help you arrange transportation out of town. Bus service to Venice and Marco Polo Airport is a snap (2 hours) or a private shuttle can take you for early morning flights. Or stay and spend more time in Cortina to visit Lago di Braies and Tre Cima Lavaredo, and do more walking in the dramatic Dolomites!
