Itinerary
Alpe di Tires
Pre-Tour Extension. Three full days and three nights in Venice, Italy. Seamlessly connects to the Day 1 start of High Dolomites (see below).
-
We’re in Venice! We’ll meet at 9am at our Grand Canal hotel for introductions and check-in. Then we’ll enjoy a watertaxi tour through back canals, past peeling palaces and busy shipyards—the perfect introduction to this waterborne city. We’ll jump off at the Galleria dell’Academia for a guided museum tour, learning about Venice’s history as an economic and cultural superpower through masterworks of art. The afternoon is free to explore further using your Venezia Unica card, or just sit at a cafe and people watch. This evening we’ll regroup for an aperitivo and dinner together.
-
Today we’ll focus on the city’s artisan craft industry and modern arts. We’ll start with a morning visit to the Rialto Market, and make our way to the palace house and studio, now a museum, of modern decorative artist, Mariano Fortuny, with a local guide. Then we’ll visit the family home of 20th Century painter, Luigina De Grandis (1923—2003). After a light lunch, we’ll continue the Peggy Guggenheim Museum for a guided tour. The afternoon and evening are free for more sightseeing and dinner on your own.
-
This morning we’ll begin with a workshop visit for Venetian oarlocks, forcule. Then we’ll keep the rest of the day open for exploring the best of this year’s contemporary art exhibitions. Tonight we’ll make a toast to Venice and its incredible works of art at a canal-side dinner together.
-
To the Dolomites! Included with your pre-tour extension is train transportation to Bolzano in anticipation of a 4pm start. We’ll aim to arrive in Bolzano around noon, in time for a quick lunch and a bit of sightseeing. Õtzi anyone?
Tour meets in Bolzano for a private bus transfer to the Alpe di Siusi (the Art Venice Extension includes train transportation from Venice to Bolzano). The tour ends in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
-
Our tour begins at 4pm at our Bolzano meeting point for a welcome celebration followed by a scenic drive north toward the Alpe di Siusi town of Castelrotto. We’ll get oriented to the town, then check into our hotel and enjoy a welcome dinner together. (Bus 1 hour, light walking, sleep at Hotel Lamm in Castelrotto 2 nights)
-
Guten morgen! The breakfast buffet is full of local pastries, fresh breads, and dairy specialties—a real hiker’s breakfast. This is our warm-up day, making use of the many lifts and trails in the Alpe di Siusi. With your lift pass, you’ll ride unlimited throughout the tour. There are easy, medium, and hard walks to choose, and the hotel spa opens mid-afternoon. A free evening for dinner awaits. (Walking: your choice).
-
Today we prepare our backpacks for our first through-hike while our suitcases will be transported to our first overnight in the alpine. Our trek will take us to the Sassolungo and Sella Pass. Welcome to the High Dolomites! (Walking: 5 hours; Sleep at Hotel Passo Sella, 1 night)
-
Don’t miss the spectacular show that begins about an hour before sunrise: morning alpenglow. A hearty breakfast will fuel us up for the day. Then with backpacks ready for the next two overnights in high huts, we’ll take a short bus transfer down valley to hike into the mythic Rosengarten (Catinaccio, in Italian) mountains that inspired King Laurin. We’ll lunch at one of the huts we pass by, then scramble our way past the dramatic Vajolet Towers to the beautifully remodeled (in 2022) Rifugio Santnerpass at 9,000’ of elevation. Group dinner together. (Walking 4 hours: Sleep: Rifugio Santnerpass 1 night).
-
After a careful descent of Santnerpass, we head north through the Rosengarten/Catinaccio group to Rifugio Alpe di Tires. The route crosses two mountain passes and several soaring towers. This evening we’ll meet hikers coming from all directions across the range. (Walking: 4 hours; Sleep: Rifugio Alpe di Tires 1 night)
-
We’ll circle back toward Sella Pass on a classic ridge line route dotted with dairy cows. Then it’s down valley by lift and over to Passo Pordoi and a night in an alpine hotel. Our luggage and a group dinner awaits. (Walking: 4 hours. Sleep: Hotel Savoia 1 night)
-
Buongiorno! We’ll pack up for another two-day trek through the mountains, using private transport to take us into the Italian-speaking region, Veneto. We spend our day at Passo Falzarego, where a cable car runs to Monte Lagazuoi. The pass was on the frontlines of WWI and today is full of relics from the era. You can explore tunnels, trenches, lookouts, and even try an entry level via ferrata route used by Austrian soldiers to reach the summit—now a 5-minute cabe car ride away. Group dinner together. (Driving: 1 hour; Walking: 1 hour + your choice; Sleep: Rifugio Col Gallina 1 night).
-
This morning we’ll set out to traverse across to the Tofana massif, passing Rifugio Dibona and taking the Freccia nel Cielo cable car to the top of the Dolomites. Dinner is on your own tonight in Cortina d’Ampezzo. (Walking: 4 hours; Sleep 2 nights at Hotel Ambra)
-
We’ve come a long way! Today is a flex day in Cortina. We’ll decide among several options depending on the weather and need to make up any activities from the past few days. Tonight we’ll toast our adventure with a celebratory last night dinner.(Walking: optional)
-
Our adventure ends here after breakfast and checkout. We’ll help you arrange transportation out of town. Bus service to Venice and Marco Polo Airport is a snap (2 hours) or a private shuttle can take you for early morning flights. Or stay and spend more time in Cortina to visit Lago di Braies and Tre Cima Lavaredo, and do more walking in the dramatic Dolomites!

Is this High Dolomites hiking tour right for you?
This tour is for experienced and reasonably fit hikers who are enthusiastic about hiking in rugged, alpine areas. We will hike up to a maximum of 8 miles and up to 3000 feet of elevation gain and/or loss in a day. Most people spend around 4—6 hours hiking each day.
There is one challenging section requiring about an hour of scrambling over rugged rocks on steep terrain with fixed cable handrails where needed, to reach a high alpine hut. If not feeling up for this, there are easier-to-reach, alternative accommodations nearby that can be arranged.
-
Steep and rugged! Hikers must have good balance and footing. Trails can be:
-Dirt roads and cow paths
-Wooded dirt paths, sometimes muddy
-Rocky, crumbly, and highly uneven
-Steep with big steps, sometimes using hands for balance
-Steep with fixed cable handrails -
The Dolomites are unique in the world for their network of remote accommodations. We will stay in a mix of 4-star hotels and mountain huts (rifugio), many situated in stunning scenery with jaw-dropping views. The huts are why we go!
Most nights the hut accommodations will be private rooms, but occasionally hikers may share a larger room with others from our group. All huts provide linens or rent them if needed, so a sleep sack is not required. -
Yes! Sturdy, well-broken-in boots, mountain clothing and gear for all types of weather conditions, and optionally, trekking poles are popular in the Dolomites. Additionally, snow spikes, a headlamp, and a working cell phone, are required. And ear plugs just in case! A full gear list will be provided upon booking.
-
Luggage portage will be provided! This allows you to trek between huts carrying only the essentials in a day pack (30-40L backpacks work great). Suitcases will be transported between hotel stays, spaced 2-3 nights apart.
-
Incredible food and drinks! The Dolomites are famous for its regional cuisines of South Tyrolean, Ladin, and Italian dishes. Most hotels and all huts all serve excellent meals to their guests. Part of the hospitality experience is enjoying wonderful food in a cozy dining room in a remote mountain hut, marveling at how everything was transported there.
